Jay's Portfolio

Last updated March 31, 2009

(Transactions since Feb. 28, 2009)

My portfolio gained 0.8 of 1% in March. I am down 2.2% year-to-date in 2009. The following will show you the portfolio as it stood on March 31, 2009. I am expanding the list to show the exact percent in each individual investment. I hope this will be helpful. All transactions since the last report were reported on the page, Jay's Recent Transactions, as they occurred.

My portfolio as of March 31, 2009:

STOCKS14.1% (MAXIMUM 15%; limited to mining shares only)

Gold Stocks – 6.9% (GDX 3.8%, VGZ 1.2%, SA 1%, AUY 0.9%)
Silver Stocks – 7.2% (SSRI 5.3%, SLW 1.9%)

As you can see, my largest single stock holding is SSRI, for reasons explained in the article, SSRI - A Rare and UnExpected Opportunity.

CASH – 29.3% (MINIMUM 30%) (All US$)

In March I converted all my cash to US$. The reason is Rogers’ forecast of coming chaos in the currency markets, as explained last month. (See Temporary Safe Haven in the Dollar.)  My recent purchase of SSRI (plus spending) reduced my cash slightly below the minimum. Most likely, I will reduce some other allocation by enough to raise cash to my minimum 30%, but I haven’t decided yet.

PHYSICALS – 56.2% (WHAT’S LEFT AFTER STOCKS & CASH)

Gold – 13.7%

Silver – 22.7%

Physical agricultural commodity ETFs – 3.5% (DBA 1.4%, RJA 1.2%, DAG 0.9%) (MAXIMUM 5%)

Physical energy commodity ETFs – 2.8% (UNG 1.2%, USO 1.1%, RJN 0.6%) (MAXIMUM 5%)
Physical index commodity ETFs – RJI 1.6% (MAXIMUM 5%)

Oil & Gas Interests – 11.8%

PUTS & CALLS – 0.4%

TOTAL – 100.0%

CLOSING THOUGHT

As a reminder, if you want to use my portfolio as a model for part or all of your investments, the three pages listed below are the most important for you to keep in touch with. They are found in the left-hand column of the home page of our web site, http://www.somehelpful.info/Money/.

  1. Jay's Portfolio – Updated monthly, you can compare your allocations to mine and decide how close you want to be to mine. It’s usually best to move in steps if there is a significant difference you want to correct.

  2. Jay's Recent Transactions – Every transaction I make (buy or sell) is usually listed on this page within a short time following the action.

  3. Investing With Jay Today – For the time being at least, this page has replaced the numbered letters (the last one was Letter 36 posted under Jay’s Investment Letters). This page, posted at varying intervals, discusses the things we consider most important at the moment, including answers to questions people are asking.

WORDS WE HOPE TO HEAR ONE DAY
"Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things,
I will make you ruler over many things.  Enter into the joy of your lord"
(Mt. 25:21 NKJV)

 WORDS ABOUT INVESTING
If you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust to true riches?" (Lk. 16:11 NKJV)

WORDS OF WARNING
The Apostle Paul wrote, "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. We brought nothing into the world and it is certain that neither can we take anything out. So having food and clothing we will be content with that. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful desires, that plunge people into ruin and loss; because the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil; in their greediness some have been led away from the faith and have impaled themselves on many distresses." (1 Tim. 6:6-10 NKJV)
