Babylon in Antiquity

Babylon is first mentioned in Genesis 10:10 as Babel. It was founded by Nimrod, the first king mentioned in the Bible, (Gen. 10:10). It was organized rebellion against God, because God clearly told man to be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth (Gen. 1:28, 9:1), not dwell together and build a city (11:1-4).

Babylon in the Times of Old Testament Israel

Later, the kingdom of Babylon developed into a world power, but the Lord said He would punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity and make it a perpetual desolation (Jer. 25:12). Over time, this eventually happened. According to Wikipedia, following Alexander's death in 323 BCE in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar, his empire was divided amongst his generals, and decades of fighting soon began, with Babylon once again caught in the middle. The constant turmoil virtually emptied the city of Babylon. A tablet dated 275 BCE states that the inhabitants of Babylon were transported to Seleucia, where a palace was built, as well as a temple given the ancient name of Esagila. With this deportation, the history of Babylon comes practically to an end, though more than a century later, it was found that sacrifices were still performed in its old sanctuary. By 141 BCE, when the Parthian Empire took over the region, Babylon was in complete desolation and obscurity (See Babylon by Wikipedia.)

Babylon in Modern Times

In 1983, Saddam Hussein started rebuilding the city on top of the old ruins, investing in both restoration and new construction. He inscribed his name on many of the bricks in imitation of Nebuchadnezzar. One frequent inscription reads: "This was built by Saddam Hussein, son of Nebuchadnezzar, to glorify Iraq". When the Gulf War ended, Saddam wanted to build a modern palace, also over some old ruins; it was made in the pyramidal style of a Sumerian ziggurat. He named it Saddam Hill. In 2003, he was ready to begin the construction of a cable car line over Babylon when the invasion began and halted the project. (The video seems to refute the idea of the historic Babylon being one and the same with the End Times Babylon of Rev. 17 and 18.)

Babylon in the End Times

Some people say that Revelation 18 is talking about this same place, but after watching the slide show, it seems highly unlikely. Besides, Revelation 18 talks about all the merchants of the earth selling their merchandise to Babylon, and all the shipmasters mourning as they watch her being destroyed in one hour. Babylon is a great consumer of the world's goods. This just doesn't seem to fit the Babylon of Nebuchadnezzar. So what is it, then? Here, we present the thesis that it is composed of (at least) three cities that rule the world - Washington DC, the Vatican and the City of London.

Why judgment on the USA?

Here are a few reasons why judgment is coming upon Babylon USA:

• Giving up God's work
  Babylon has been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. (Jer. 51:7)
  
  And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you. (2 Chr. 24:20)
   
• Pre-emptive wars to protect corporate interests
  Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. (Ps. 2:1-5)

Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. (Isa. 1:10-15)

Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols. But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. (Amos 5:21-24) 

What should Christians in the US do?
Do not be a part of the system. Be separate, set apart to Jesus Christ. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. (Rev. 18:4,5)

For some, this may mean staying where they are but not participating in the evil deeds of the culture. For others, it may mean moving out of cities to more rural areas. For some, it may mean leaving the country. For more ideas, see Tribulation Contingency Plan.
